| Born Greenock, Scotland. He moved to Enniskillen, Northern Ireland in 1924. He studied at Belfast College of Art, 1928-31. After World War 2 he taught at Bath Academy of Art (1946–56). He visited Canada and New York in 1953, meeting Jackson Pollock and other leading Abstract Expressionists. His preferred subject was still-life, painted in a simplified, nearly abstract way. In 1977 he was elected to the RA.
