| O’Malley was born in Callan, County Kilkenny. A self taught painter. He began painting whilst recovering from ill health during the 1940’s. and started to exhibit his work during the 1950’s. He retired from his banking job in 1958 to become a full time artist. O’Malley moved to St Ives, Cornwall in 1960. This was due to the indifference to his art in Ireland and the freedom of St Ives artists that he had experienced in previous holidays to Cornwall.
